Nancy Pelosi is an American politician who served as the 61st and 63rd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the first woman to hold the position. 

A member of the Democratic Party, she represented California's 12th congressional district from 1989 to 2013, and the 14th district from 2013 to 2023.

Pelosi was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in a family active in Democratic Party politics. She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., and Georgetown University Law Center. 

After working as a public interest lawyer and raising her five children, Pelosi entered politics in the 1970s. She served as chair of the California Democratic Party from 1981 to 1983, and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1988.

In the House, Pelosi quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Democratic whip in 2001 and the House minority leader in 2003. After Democrats regained control of the House in 2006, Pelosi was elected Speaker for the first time. She served as Speaker from 2007 to 2011, and again from 2019 to 2023.

As Speaker, Pelosi oversaw the passage of some of the most significant legislation in recent American history, including the Affordable Care Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. She also

played a key role in impeaching President George W. Bush in 2007 and President Donald Trump in 2019.

Pelosi is a controversial figure, loved by Democrats and loathed by Republicans. She is seen by her supporters as a strong and effective leader who has made history as the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the House. Her critics say she is too partisan and too quick to use impeachment as a political weapon.

Pelosi is married to Paul Pelosi, a venture capitalist. They have five children and nine grandchildren.

Pelosi is a practicing Catholic and a supporter of abortion rights, gun control, and LGBT rights. She is also a strong advocate for women's rights and has spoken out against sexual harassment and assault.
